When Erik and I took ownership of Penuel Chapel on 1st August 2024, we found the graveyard in a sad condition. Not only was it terribly overgrown with brambles, many — if not most — of the headstones had been removed from their original positions by the chapel’s previous owners. On top of this, much garbage had been scattered throughout the place of rest, including the burnt remains of paint, glue, wood and metal, with it even appearing as though excavation work had been carried out at some point. We do not know the reasons for the graveyard’s poor condition, but were determined to restore peace and dignity to the best of our ability.

Since then, we have discovered a Schedule of Graves document dating to 1892 which we hope will help to reunite headstones to graves. I also attempted some solo clearing of the overgrowth, resulting in the liberation of a grave with its headstone still in place belonging to a lady who died in 1839 called Elizabeth. After I released a video documenting my endeavours (see below), I was overwhelmed by offers of help to finish clearing the graveyard.

And so, I would love to extend an invitation to those of you who are willing and able to come to our Graveyard Volunteer Day at Penuel, this Michaelmas (Sunday 29th September) between 12 and 5pm. Erik and I will both be there, very much looking forward to meet you and — fingers-crossed — clearing a bramble or two together. There will be hot drinks and snacks available to those who attend, with you welcome to stay for as little or as long as you like. Please bring your own gardening equipment.
