about rowtons’ museum

Home to hundreds of artefacts of spiritual and paranormal significance, Rowtons’ Museum of the Paranormal and Spirituality tells the story of belief from times of faith and wonder, to those of existential stress and fear, to a new search for meaning in the modern age.

We are a living museum: a sacred space and active place of spiritual contemplation. As such, we believe in promoting the spiritual philosophy of Perennialism through our special objects, displays, and spaces. We are committed to collecting, conserving, interpreting, and exhibiting tangible and intangible heritage, in addition to providing a safe space for paranormal research, spiritual exploration, contemplation, investigation, and growth. Guided by the desire to make sense of humanity’s place within both the seen and unseen universe, we offer varied and immersive experiences for our guests that go beyond static museum displays, encouraging not only education, but also enjoyment, reflection, discussion, and experiential gnosis.

In addition to daytime visits, we also host varied events, including séances, paranormal investigations, spiritual ceremonies (such as our seasonal Alchemical Fire Ceremonies), weekly guided meditations, and evenings of clairvoyance.

who are we?

Rowtons’ Museum of the Paranormal and Spirituality was founded in 2024 by internationally-renowned paranormal researchers Laura and Erik Rowton. After years of studying and investigating the strange and spooky, most notably via their documentary films and popular YouTube channel The Paranormal Scholar, the Rowtons decided to put their private collection of paranormal and spiritual artefacts on display, and — through material encounter and events designed to encourage personal experience — share the secrets of the unseen with members of the public.

Laura Rowton was born in the United Kingdom, where she shared her childhood bedroom — the cellar of a 19th century cottage — with the spirit of a serial killer. Haunted, she developed a fascination for all things bizarre and unexplained, filling her formative years with visits to mediaeval castles and crumbling, ancient ruins… and the ghosts who inhabited them. Attending the University of Cambridge in 2014 so as to pursue her twin passion for history and the paranormal, she ultimately left to become a filmmaker, writer, and full-time paranormal researcher. In the years since, she has been driven by a desire to bridge the gap between the high towers of academia and public interest in anomalous phenomena. Laura has had many personal experiences over the years, including spirit communication, ecstatic visions, prophetic dreams, and encounters with higher beings via deep meditation and etheric projection. Laura’s work is shaped by spiritual alchemy and the principles of Hermeticism, and thus the desire to uncover the Perennial truths at the heart of existence.

Erik Rowton had a profound near-death experience as a child and has been searching for answers ever since. Born in Miami, Florida, he emigrated from the United States in 2010 to explore the Gothic, cobbled streets of Central Europe, the mysterious, megalithic coastline of Western France, and, eventually, the myth-filled mountains of Wales — where he currently lives with his wife, Laura. A full-time documentary filmmaker and paranormal investigator, he considers the otherworldly to be his spiritual calling. In particular, he is fascinated by the undercurrent of universal truth that underpins all belief systems across place and time. Erik is a strong advocate for us all having inherent psychic sensitivities, with his own awareness of the Other Side strengthened by his regular meditation practise and role within the museum’s spiritual development group, the Rose Circle. He particularly enjoys researching and developing new experiments and methods of investigation for museum guests to enjoy during evening events.

In the summer of 2015, Laura and her then fiancé, Erik, created The Paranormal Scholar, a YouTube channel and website dedicated to the objective exploration of the strange and spooky. Since then, the Rowtons have cultivated a successful brand, comprising over half a million subscribed followers and sixty-five million views, with many of their documentary-style videos achieving in excess of a million views individually. Beloved by audiences in the United States, the United Kingdom, and across the globe, Laura — as the voice and face of The Paranormal Scholar — is synonymous with the scholarly exploration of the paranormal.

Some of the couple’s most viewed documentaries include their examinations of the true stories behind popular horror movies, including The Conjuring and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, as well as their groundbreaking investigation of the Pentyrch UFO incident, for which they were invited to speak on Coast to Coast AM with the investigative journalist George Knapp.

the rowtons’ OTHER PROJECTS

Determined to elevate the reputation of the paranormal, in 2017 Laura and Erik Rowton began filming for In Search of the Dead, their debut feature documentary film. Embarking on a journey of discovery in search of proof of life after death, they travelled across Europe so as to meet, interview, and investigate alongside psychic mediums, paranormal researchers, writers, and recognised university academics. The film, however, soon took an unexpected turn, when Laura — through an interaction with a psychic medium — was forced to confront her childhood demons, namely the ghost of the 19th century serial killer who had haunted her family home. Released in 2019, the documentary went on to make it into the Official Selection of several international film festivals, and is now considered staple-viewing by their loyal and ever-expanding following.

Jane Blakemore was Murdered (2023) continues the work began in In Search of the Dead (2019) by using various paranormal methods to piece together the final moments of one of the killer’s victims, with the results of the Rowtons’ findings being both historically and medically verified.

Laura has also represented paranormal and spiritual perspectives on television, including in Channel 5’s two-part series Mysteries of the Pyramids with Dara O’Briain, produced by Wildflame Productions in 2024. Her most recent television appearance was in the Summer of 2026, when she shared her work at the museum in a Weird Britain episode.
